Selection Process
- Shortlisting (application form section G)
- If it becomes essential to shortlist candidates for an interview following an eligibility screening, the Panel will apply shortlisting criteria 1 and 2 in the following order:
- Section G1 of the shortlisting criteria requires the candidate to present compelling evidence of how their research proposal addresses the DAERA Research Need 2025 that you have chosen. The candidate must also provide evidence by outlining the research's target audience, its potential impact, particularly its economic impact, and how the findings will be used.
- Criteria for shortlisting: (part G2) The candidate must present substantial proof of the caliber of the research plan.
Interview
- On April 14, 15, and 16, 2025, criteria-based interviews will take place at Clare House, 303 Airport Road West, Belfast, BT4 9ED.
- Those who are invited for an interview will receive written notice via email of the interview date and time. Only in the case of an emergency or illness will the dates at 6.2.1 be altered. There will not be any fees associated with attending interviews.
- Research applicants Before being interviewed, studentship candidates are required to have thoroughly thought through the project they want to work on, discussed it with, and gotten advice from a suitably qualified adviser.
- During the interview, candidates will not be allowed to use any prepared notes to answer questions from the panel.
Duration of studentship
- Studentships typically last no more than three years, though they may be renewed annually with the supervisor's approval. Every year, DAERA staff members typically meet with supervisors and students to review progress.
- Before the third year of the studentship begins, the student must be officially registered for a PhD. Students who initially intended to apply for an MPhil are not eligible for studentships. The studentship will not be extended into the third year if it is known prior to the commencement of the third year that the student would be applying for an MPhil. A student's studentship will end right away if they transfer to an MPhil program in their third year.
- We must be notified right away of any issues that arise that could seriously affect the studentship's progress. The Department will only consider extensions past the standard three-year funding period in extraordinary circumstances. Only in order to make up for time lost due to circumstances beyond the student's and the host institution's control can an extension be granted. To do this, a formal request must be sent to DAERA, with the supervisor's agreement. A detailed plan for finishing within the allotted time should be included, along with the request's current status of progress toward completion and any unforeseen circumstances that have slowed it down.
